Introducing: Miss Juliet who made her debut on Sunday! The taste of spring a week ago was so encouraging…and then we had the reality of snow, cold wind, and breaking more ice off the water buckets. But there’s no mistaking that spring is coming…soon! It’s time to prioritize the spring projects!
#1) As the ground thaws we need to build some fence! Last year some of this dirt raised corn and soybeans harvested with a tractor or combine…no fence needed. But now we’ve planted some grasses and we “direct harvest”: our cattle eat the “crop” right in the field 🙂 So a fence is absolutely necessary!
#2) We’re building a store. If you’ve been following on Facebook, the old buildings on the site have been razed and the ground is ready for a new use. We’re excited to build a store so you can stop in anytime for your pastured meats and eggs. For now, we can arrange pick-up for $5/doz eggs in Willow Street or Peach Bottom (near Little Britain). Mention this article and get a dozen eggs for $4..our hens are on a roll! Pick-up appointments will also serve anyone who would like our mid-May meat chickens. And…we are excited to build an on-farm store so you can help yourself to the cuts and quantities that you want when we get our first Dexter beef in early August and our pork in the fall. If you’re looking for a guaranteed product -not dependent on store stock- make sure to pre-order whole or half portions of beef or pork on our website www.kropfmeadowsfarm.com.
Our winter season of rest (as it relates to animal care) is concluding. Chicks are here and will start their time in the pasture once it warms a bit, the calving season has started and will spread over the next month or two, and the piglets are coming soon. Stay tuned for all the cute pictures of new life on the farm! I don’t like to wish away my days longing, but occasionally it’s healthy to remind myself that warmer days are coming; strawberries, flowers, and fresh, pastured meat for all your summer cook-outs is on its way!
