Hello friends and happy spring! On Kropf Meadows Farm this season is bringing a good “problem”: our egg refrigerator is full! So we’re offering our next 15 dozen eggs at $2/dozen! Let me know how many you’d like and when you want to pick them up from our farm. If you’ve been thinking of trying pastured eggs…this is your golden opportunity. Get a dozen from us and a dozen from the grocery store and have a taste test for breakfast tomorrow!
Not all pastured eggs are created equal. Officially, “pastured” eggs are laid by chickens with some exposure to fresh air and sunshine. For some farms that means a fixed outdoor chicken run that often ends up as a dirt lot because extended chicken pressure is hard on grass. Some farms have a big chicken house with a small door to the outside that is open for a few hours each day. Both “earn” the “pastured” label. A simple internet search provides a variety of information/research about how much confinement and crowding can still qualify as free range/pastured poultry. At Kropf Meadows Farm, our chickens live on green grass. We have a mobile hen house where they lay their eggs and roost at night. Most days they parade down the ramp in the morning and spend the majority of their day scratching for bugs and resting in the shade under the hen house before the evening parade back up the ramp. On very rare occasions (when there is a layer of snow and bitter cold temperatures) they prefer to stay inside, but otherwise they prefer to be outside for much of their day. Our chickens love to be outside and live a life with lots of space to run, scratch, and explore. Moving them regularly (weekly or biweekly) is a win-win: the chickens get new grass and bugs, and the grass gets time to take in the fertilizer of chicken poop and grow back even stronger than before. We’re not after a “pastured” label; we’re after the best life for our chickens, the best care of our land, and the best food for our family and yours!
And if you’re looking for some pastured chicken meat raised with the same standards, we have whole birds and parts (breast, wings, leg & thigh packs) in our freezer that was processed just 2 weeks ago.
Thanks for following us and allowing us to serve you. If you have questions, give us a shout! Have a wonderful week!
With Our Appreciation,
Delvin & Rebecca
